GUMUS (2005)
In 2005 Cosmic theatre (now known as MC) initiated 5 monologues who shared the same decor (a large, bended movie screen designed by theatre designer and former teacher of mine Stans Lutz) and all plays had a 'new dutch' political figure as main caracter. I was asked to create a movie wich supports the play GUMUS.
GUMUS was a Turkish tailor. He and his family tried their luck as refugees in Holland. He Worked for 10 years as a self employed tailor starting his own tailor shop before being kicked out of Holland because he could not account for 2 of the 10 years as a legal refugee.
I created a movie with a large sewing head shown on the left side of the screen, representing his sight for the past years, and the result of the sewing on the right. First it starts as neat sewings but rapidly it changes into messy stitching just as his life is changing into a mess. On stage the actor is ripping newspapers but behind him on the screen the sewing machine is sewing the newspapers (reality) together again. Sometimes an noise and loud embroidery machine stitches silhouettes of his family or himself.
